MIA

I know many of you have found yourself thinking, "Whatever happened to that incredibly handsome, freakishly blue-eyed dachshund we used to love reading about?!"

Well...I am here to apologize for having been MIA lately. As you can imagine, when summer hits here in Alaska, we tend to spend all of our time outdoors, enjoying the sunshine (although this summer we've barely seen the sun, but don't get me started on that).

Once the fish are in, our house becomes a deserted wasteland, only to be used for sleeping, eating, and cleaning fish. I must have you know however, Brody LOVES fishing. Well perhaps I should say he loves FISH! I remember the very first time we took Brody camping back in CA, he fell in love with the roe (processed fish eggs used for bait), fish carcasses, and generally anything that smelled fishy. He ate so much roe that weekend (much to his mother's dismay), that he spent the next day throwing up, but of course that didn't stop him from wanting to do it all over again.

J just loves to tease Brody with fish, I even have evidence to prove it:

Please excuse the poor quality of this photo, I took it with the horrible camera on my phone. I really wish I could've snapped the photo at the right moment. Brody was licking at the fish head as J kept pulling it back, teasing him, "Give 'em a kiss, give 'em a kiss!" It was too cute and it actually looked like he was kissing the fish.

It's a constant effort, trying to get Brody to leave the fish alone. If you saw him whenever a fish is involved, you'd think it was his own personal brand of heroin! Of course as I'm yelling at him to leave the fish alone, he always shoots me those sad, pathetic eyes like, "But mom, they smell soooo yummy!"

Last summer on vacation on the Oregon coast, we met a seafood vendor whose dog almost died from salmon poisening. I had never heard of such a thing! You might look it up on the internet or ask your vet before feeding Brody anymore raw salmon. It's scary stuff! (We saw very little sun in NW Washington this summer as well, and now Fall is starting to creep in.)

Isis does the same thing with the apples from our trees. She eats them, hides them, eats them, moves them from place to place, eats more, barks at the squirrels who steal them and drop them on her head, and chases the other dogs away when they get to close to her stash and hiding places. Did I mention she eats them all the time.

A squirrel ran across the neighbors roof with one one day and Isis saw it out the window and went nuts.

Glad mind don't like fish-i'm not a fish eater- but they like fishy cat food. LOL

Riley's Mom - I know about the salmon poisoning, it's only when the salmon is infected with a parasite and then that parasite is infected with an organism. Check out this link: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clientEd/salmon.aspx

Our salmon here is fresh from the ocean, it hits the river within a few hours. When we catch it, it sometimes still has sea lice on it, it's so fresh! Thanks for the heads up though, a lot of people don't even know about salmon poisoning in dogs.

Ev - Did you ever see my post about Brody and Mr Squirrel? Check it out: http://www.whosyourdachshund.com/2010/01/brody-mr-squirrels-excellent-adventure.html
