Generally when people think of California they think of copious amounts of sunshine, beaches, bikinis, and blondes. Most people are under the impression that the entire state of California is sunny 365 days of the year. Granted, there are parts of the state where this is the case, but contrary to popular belief there is in fact snow in California.
In fact, Brody’s first experience in the snow was nearly a year ago. For my birthday, J and I went to Mt. Shasta (which is about an hour away from our hometown). You can read about Brody’s first experience with the snow here. Long story short, he wasn’t too sure about the snow and who can blame him considering he’s barely six inches off the ground without the snow! I wouldn’t be too sure either if my belly was constantly skimming the freezing cold snow. Before moving to Alaska this year, everyone of course had their comments and jokes to crack about Brody getting carried away by an eagle (if you’ve seen The Proposal, you’ve seen the ridiculous scene where the eagle tries to carry away their tiny dog). By the way, that movie was filmed in Canada NOT Alaska, which is the case with almost all movies where the story is set in Alaska. Apparently our unpredictable weather is too scary for Hollywood movie crews. Oh and to ease your minds, dogs are NOT carried away by eagles here, there…now you may sleep safely.
I digress…of course when we first moved here I wondered how Brody would handle the snow. Sadie (our black lab) absolutely loves the snow, she always has. She runs and frolics through the snow in a general state of glee whenever she’s in it (you can also read about Sadie’s love for snow in the post mentioned earlier). But because of Brody’s initial hesitation, I wasn’t quite sure how his first winter in Alaska was going to turn out.
To my surprise and relief he has a newfound love for snow. His new favorite activity is to go straight out into the street in front of our house (don’t worry it’s not a busy street) and run up and down the road at top speed. Now I’m sure all of my fellow dachshund lovers out there know how incredibly funny it is to watch a dachshund run at top speed with their tail tucked under their booty and their lips stretched back revealing their cute little toothy smiles of pure enjoyment.
For your viewing pleasure, I took a short video of Brody doing just that. Please excuse Brody relieving himself during the first few seconds of the video, but I just thought it was too funny to take out, especially the way he stares straight at me like, “What mom? We came outside to pee didn’t we? I gotta go!” Sorry for the blurriness and unsteady camera action at times, the camera has a hard time staying in focus while keeping up with Brody’s speediness. The last few seconds of the video are the best part.
No matter how many times I watch that video or how many times I see him do it in real life I cannot help but laugh every time. As you all know, dachshunds are the clowns of the dog world, they live to make us laugh and see us smile.
Once Brody’s done getting his laps in for the day and we come inside, he runs up the stairs and all over the house in what I think is an effort to get warm again. It’s funny how the icy cold gives him a sudden surge of energy, but of course that only lasts for a few minutes and then he’s ready for a nap.

What a fun video! It reminded me of how Riley ran top speed, for what must have felt like MILES for him, on the sandy beaches of the Oregon Coast. A Dachshund doing hot laps is one of the cutest things ever!
One of my favourite videos of Theo is him romping in the snow too! My guys are picky about their snow conditions though. They like the light and fluffy. Once it gets crunchy and precarious, it's game over.
so cute, and i love the sound of his feet on the snow!
