Any good rescue group has its adopters sign a contract when they adopt the dog. One of the most important clauses involves what to do if they can't keep the dog anymore. It's required that the dogs be returned to the rescue group, and that the group will take them back in.
It's usually a sucky situation for all involved, but most of all for the dogs. They've been promised a forever home, but something just didn't work out. Dogs who were cute and young may be a bit older, and thus a little bit harder to adopt back out. CTDR has seen more dogs coming back this year, in these hard times. And one of my fosters from three years ago is now one of them, along with another dog adopted by the same family. So even though I said I was taking a *break* from fostering, I now have six dogs in my house again!!
Lucky and Candy are super sweet and snuggly, and we're happy to have them here at Fat Frank's. Here they are with Thor on the couch.
I got Lucky just about 3 years ago out of the Dallas shelter.
I remember going back to get him, and finding this cute little thing with bad teeth and a weird growth on his neck. Someone had surrendered him to the shelter - not sure why. As I was walking out, they go, "Oh yeah, they told us his name was Lucky." I certainly thought that was an ironic name! But he is lucky in that he will never end up on the streets again, no matter what. He is still the same silly little guy I knew then, and he really just has so much love and life in him!
I'm not sure of Candy's story since I didn't originally foster her, but man she is a little spitfire. Wiggly and cute and so affectionate! I was taking holiday pics of my dogs and got one of her, even though she's a bit camera shy.
I bet they will be adopted again pretty quickly even though we want them to go together.
I'm sure lots of other rescue groups are getting hit hard now. December is always a tough month! If you are so inclined this holiday season, make a donation to your favorite group - it will be much appreciated!
If I may shamelessly plug now, CTDR will send a card to a gift recipient with a donation of $10 or more. The card is really cute and features my other foster dog, Isabella!

Those are gorgeous pictures as always, Courtney!
OMG, this breaks my heart! My Riley was returned to the shelter TWICE before we found him. And, our Gus was taken to the shelter by a woman claiming he was a stray, but it turned out was his owner. Most likely she did it because he is older and needed expensive dental work. How in the world anyone could abandon a dog is beyond me. Thanks Courtney for caring so much and keeping these great dogs off the streets!

We had some "bounce backs" this years - I thinks it's unavoidable with the economy. But our director says everything happens for a reason, and each of our return visitors have gotten terrific homes. Courtney, just keep the faith - a perfect home will come looking for two.
Also....I really can't imagine giving up one of my dogs. I know it happens, but I can't imagine the circumstances that would make me okay with it.
I've always wanted to foster mini dachshunds but I just don't think I could give them away when it was time. Look at those faces!
