Looking for something?

A South American Salchicha

It took quite a bit of convincing for my husband to believe that we were ready to welcome a puppy into our lives in Chile. I had wanted one for years now so I was beyond excited when he finally said yes. That is when the search began. I knew exactly what I wanted: a long-haired miniature dachshund. My family back in Colorado has always had long-haired doxies and I just love them so much. We also really wanted a mini because we currently live in an apartment in Santiago, the 6 million-person capital of Chile, and figured having a mini would be better.

I tell you, it was not easy to find a long-haired mini in this country. As my husband would say, we were on the search for a nearly “extinct” species in Chile. In my two plus years of living here, I have seen quite a few salchichas (the Chilean slang term for wiener-dog), but had only seen one or two with long hair. It took about one month of daily phone calls and internet searches until I finally found someone who had what we were looking for. While internet searches in the States will fill your browser with different breeder’s websites, it isn’t really like that here. You mostly find what you want via phone calls. And that means calling one person, asking them if they have what you want and when they say no, asking them if they know of anyone who has what you want. Then you just make the go-around until you strike gold. I was just in luck when I called our breeder-to-be because she had just one cachorrita (puppy) left. I asked her to send us pictures of the puppy so we could decide if we would make the trip out to el campo (the countryside) where she lived. She obliged and the next day, the following picture was at the top of my inbox.

(In this picture Dulcinea was just shy of 2 months.)

At first sight my husband and I were sold on this puppy. We asked a friend with a car to take us to el campo so that we could meet the puppy, see her parents and talk to the breeder. I could barely contain the smile on my face once I knew we were going to meet her. I already had my heart set on her. I even came up with a name for her—she would be called Dulcinea. The perfect name for such a sweet puppy, because dulce means sweet in Spanish.

(My husband took this picture of myself with Dulcinea, who was 3.5 months old at the time.)

We had to wait a few weeks after that first visit before we could pick her up. The only thing my husband and I wanted was to have her. We just couldn’t wait. Now it has been over 2 months since we received her and it seems like we have had her forever, like she always existed in our lives. Our lives have changed quite a bit—we come home for lunch every day to play with her, we have to wake up early on the weekends to take care of her & maintain her schedule, we take her out in the evenings and we try to train her every day too. My husband is the official trainer of the house, every morning he wakes up and teaches her how to sit, stay, come, rollover, etc. At the young age of 4 months old, she had already learned a variety of tricks and surprises us with how quickly she continues to learn more. We train her in English as the words are more concise. For example, sit becomes siĆ©ntate, which just has too many syllables. Plus we plan to eventually move back to the States and figure it will just be easier if she knows the commands in English. We made a special video for Who’s Your Dachshund of the tricks that Dulcinea performs. We hope you enjoy her little show!

That's fantastic! We have our second wiener dog (fourth for my wife), but have had zero success training them.

I'm curious - why is a Chilean dog trained with commands in English?

Great pup, and I love the name1
