To say that Fred loves toys is a huge understatement. He LOVES them; he lives for them. Mostly for destroying them and ripping the squeakers out.
We often let him go shopping. Please note how he is balanced on the wire bin edges. NUT!
A couple years ago, Adam bought him a big Jolly Ball. Fred's toys have to be big so he can't shove them under furniture or under the deck outside. That's a fun game for him, but not fun for us when we have to bend down and pull his toys out. So, our toys aren't necessarily dachshund-sized.
Fred will play fetch until we stop him. People come over and play fetch with Fred, at his insistence, and we have to tell the PEOPLE to stop throwing the ball. My parents watched the dogs once and said "oh Fred is limping. I guess we played with him too much." You think!? (He was fine, thankfully.)
Tragically, this year, the old Jolly Ball had a run-in and became disfigured.
Some dog apparently chewed the handle off - I have no idea who, as it happened when I was out of town and Adam was watching the dogs. Or, not watching them, as he doesn't really know who did it either. Fred would still carry it by that little stump, but it wasn't as easy for him. So we thought Fred would want a new Jolly Ball to replace this one. Here is Fred with his Jolly Ball collection.
First I bought him one with a rope handle, thinking that would be good because it couldn't be chewed off.
But ... it's not Jolly Ball Classic. He'll pick it up, but it's quickly discarded.
So then I found a JB that is actually Fred's size!
He does like this one, but ... nothing compares to the original, I guess. It's usually the ball of choice when he brings us one.
The Jolly Balls have to be outdoor-only, as they get pretty gross and I don't want them on the furniture. Fred's pretty good about leaving them, but sometimes he tries to sneak 'em inside. So we have to keep the indoor supply of toys to his liking as well.
His current favorite toy puzzles me. It's a chicken - a rubber chicken. I won it at an agility trial with Thor, and brought it home thinking it would be shredded in about 2 minutes. But no.
He loves the chicken and cares for it like it's his Precious. I've spent a fortune on toys marketed as durable, indestructible, etc., and the dog loves a flimsy little chicken!!

Its sounds like a male doxie thing. Had one that had fetish for balls bigger than him hed go nuts over em an wld eat the doggy toys that squeakeds tried take him shoppin at pets smart once told him he ccld pick one toy out the stinker picked a 29.45 lion that roared when squeaked told him no i got him a 3 dollar football he pouted all way home i only had 5 bucks didnt want borrow from my mom she was going get it for him he was grandmas favorite . its a boy doxie thing i think
Oh my gosh - the video is so cute. He's adorable. And very fast!
He is too amazing! I found an organic special wool toy for my newest doxie, which was shredded in 8 minutes, was $3 a minute,he has an old hand e down camel which is his favorite sans ears, squeaker, stuffing, and facial features,he also uses it as a pillow sometimes.Where can i find the chicken toy?
That first picture is hilarious. There is a toy called, I think, Egg Babies- a stuffed toy that has a pocket with stuffed squeaky eggs inside. It's a weird concept but it makes sense- the dogs can disembowel over and over. My dogs are obsessed with the thing. It's become THE toy while others languish in the toy basket. Anyway, I've got shredded egg babies everywhere. I think Hamish would love that rubber chicken though.
omg this made me laugh!
riley's the same with fetch, and i also have to tell people that HE WON'T STOP if they keep playing. but riley loves tennis balls. i just have to replace them frequently. i need to try a jolly ball outside, because he has no interest in tennis balls outside.
I recently got Tofu an octopus toy that, among other things, had squeakers in each leg. Well, as soon as he figured out how to chew one squeaker out that was it. The rest were removed in minutes. Must find one of those silly rubber chickens..!
lol the first comment!! 29.45 lion that roared. "but you saaaaaaid...."
I can't decide if that first pic gives me nightmares or laugh-cramps.
This is so hilarious!! In our house all the squeakers go first too. Which I to don't get as Lila LOVES her squeaky toys.
They do have one or two toys that have gone that extra mile though, and they guard them fiercly.
Oh my gosh, Fred is absolutely adorable! He is so cute, especially when Adam is about to kick the ball and Fred gets sooo excited. It's so cute, I can't stand it! I don't know why I find this insanely cute, but I do! Not to mention that the ball is huge compared to his little sausage-body and he carries it back with so much bravado. This is why I just loooove dachshunds!
And the chicken. That is just priceless. :O)
