According to the breed standard, dachshunds come in two sizes: miniature and standard. Minis are 11 pounds and less, and standards are 16 pounds and greater.
My foster dog, Maceo, exceeds standard(s).
Yes, my friends, that's about 35 pounds of pure dachshund. Certainly, ones this big exist, but he's the first one I've actually SEEN. He makes Thor, at 20 pounds, look small, and Napoleon look positively tiny.
Another size illustration: Maceo, Thor and Fred on a walk at the Oak Cliff Nature Preserve. The trails weren't that narrow, but all 3 insisted on walking in front and totally smushed together like this!
We used to foster Great Danes too - now, THAT is a big dog. Maceo is for sure all dachshund, but reminds me of my old large pals. Maceo's whole butt wiggles when he wags his tail. He leans on you when you pet him. And he loves to snuggle and sit on laps. His tail knocks low objects flying, and he can reach the counters. (!!) At least he doesn't drool like a Dane.
I'm not great at math, but if I counted correctly, Maceo is our 58th foster dachshund. It's not always easy to foster, but the rewards are many. If you've ever thought about doing it, I urge you to sign up with a local group. Typically they pay all medical bills, so you just have to provide the food and the love!

Holy moses...
Like Ben, my reaction was WOW.
:)
Welcome to the WYD clan!
So glad I found your blog! We adopted a rescue dachshund 2 years ago. HE was severly abused prior to us getting him. He's a handful but we love him. We now have 2!

he is wonderful! Giant dachshunds are always a sight to behold. At 17 pounds Baxter tends to tower over all the minis that live here. It would be fun for Baxter to play with a doxie that's actually bigger than he is! Welcome Courtney to the blog! Looking forward to your future posts!
Hugs,
Baxter

That is a very big wiener... and a mighty handsome one at that!!
Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog
The big boy is beautiful and he's official - he's at the high end of the breed standard for weight - don't let anyone tell you you're a freak Maceo.
omg, i'm in michigan and if i much closer, i'd snag him up immediately. what a handsome boy! i must have him!
lol...
Ike is 9 pounds. He needs someone like Maceo to whip his whiny 6 year old butt into shape. ;)
i thought my Macho was a big boy! I LOVE Maceo, he is adorable! I love bigger dachshunds they are so easy to hug!
HA! on the other end of the spectrum, I have a SUPER-teeny weenie! He's not full grown yet, so I'm still waiting to see what he'll grow into, but at 3 months old he is about 5 lbs. And his parents only weighed 7 and 8 lbs. I'd like to see my little one next to yours. THAT would be a sight!
I. Want. HIM.
He is so awesome! His smiley face kills me:)I would probably die with giddiness if I actually saw one that big in person.

Oh my goodness, I could not stop laughing after seeing that photo! They are all so cute, but Maceo is quite the looker. He is a giant (in the dachshund world)!
Oh my gosh - Maceo. Too cute. And he's smiling so much in all of the pictures!
We have, to this date, fostered ONE dachshund! lol. We really want to get started with another soon.
he's a beautiful dog!
Just more doxie to love!
I've only seen one other doxie close to that size, and I still don't really believe I saw what I saw.
That is One.big.dachshund...but if they were bred to fight badgers they'd need to be at least that size!?
I want that dog. If I could I would adopt him in an instant. If I was closer. If there was a way to get him to me.
We foster doxies as well. We are on our second foster. Her name is Bella and she is 11 pounds. We just got her Yesterday.
I want to adopt him soooooo bad.
I have a 15 pounder that looks identical to him. Its like looking in a mirror. Except a mirror that shows things double in size.
I love Black and Tan...
YOU GUYS ARE IN DALLAS????!!!!
I AM IN DALLAS. I live in the Plano/Allen area.
We foster for ATDR. Who do you foster for?
I love him! I have a 33 lbs long hair doxie girl and I always thought she was so abnormal, now I see that she is just on the higher end of the standard size. :)
I too have an XL Dachshund weighing in at 31 lbs! I adopted him from a pound in 2005. People always ask if he's a real dachshund and I get conflicting opinions from people, but after seeing Maceo I now feel he's the real deal! Not that it mattered... He loves rabbit holes and squirrels and is good at his "job"- much to my dismay. So glad to have found your blog.
We have a rescue dachshund that came to us grossly overweight. We have slowly dieted him from 44 pounds down to 35. He is a standard with massive paws and big bone structure. A recent blood test at the vets indicated he may need thyroid medication. We started low dosage just this past weekend and hopefully it will make him feel more alert, smooth out his shedding hair and help slim him down a bit. Any other advice?
