Choosing Sides

When I'm not in a relationship, it seems like Ike worships me to no end. But if I'm in one? It is as if I never existed at all. Let me...explain.

Earlier this year, I ended a four year relationship with someone I should have ended it with long before now. Ike was extremely attached to him. If my ex and I were sitting on opposite couches, then the dog would always choose him. Always. Even if I had the blanket on my lap. And we know how much a dachshund loves their blankets. He would also sleep on my ex's side of the bed. And if I chose not to sleep in the bedroom that night, of COURSE, he wanted to sleep with the ex. He would jump out of the bed I was in and try to scratch his way out of the room.

Obviously, this was a dog obsessed.

And when we broke up, the dog went through a bit of depression. I know some people think that is ridiculous, but he really did not act like himself. I moved out and the dog came with me. And all Ike did was sit at the door. He didn't have to go potty. He didn't want to go for a walk. He wanted to go "home." He visibly lost weight because he didn't want to eat.

This when on for a few weeks, but eventually, he came around. He suddenly was a mama's boy again and I was happy. He wanted to be near me, whined when I left and no longer spent his nights by the door as if waiting for a miracle. As much as it annoys me to have a dachshund in bed with me, I enjoy the warmth.

BUT THEN!

I started dating someone new. We've been seeing each other for a couple of months, and as you know we've been transitioning our two dogs. Which is working great! But now, after leaving him with the new boyfriend a few times while I went to work? Ike is now becoming greatly attached to him. It's starting all over again! Not that I mind because sometimes all I want to do is homework and if the boyfriend can distract him, have at it! But still...it's kind of sad when we're around him, because Ike suddenly doesn't want anything to do with me. Like I'm not his 'real' owner. . .

Ever experience this with your dachshunds?

Even after the boyfriend bought Ike this costume (WHICH IKE HATED WITH A PASSION!!), he STILL favored him over me!

My little doxy is the same stinkin' way. Uggh! He is all about my husband. Oh sure, he loves me loads when it's just the two of us, but the second my hubby walks in the door, that doggy forgets that I even exist. :(

BTW, As you can see from my pic, our pup wore the same costume this Howl-o-weenie. Like your baby, ours seemed to be plotting our slow death while wearing it.

My poor dad felt this way about Calvin when the pup loved everyone except for him. Luckily Theo came along and quickly got into the habit of gleefully running toward him with his ears flapping in the breeze. All is once again right with the world.

My husband complains that Riley "loves me more", but he seems to share his loyalty equally. Although if he thinks I'm getting ready for bed, he'll come running from wherever he is to jump on the bed and burrow into his blanket. As for the flapping ears: That's about the cutest thing I've ever seen!

Um, so, yeah. Tofu is like this but I'm on the receiving end of the extra love so I'm not complaining about it. I can't even explain why...

I have an overwhelming need to be loved by all puppies. I seriously get upset if I am visiting someone and their dog ignores me. You really can't recover when you squat down on the ground pleading, "Love me, puppy."

I'm surprised, really. I assumed that puppies like the ones who fed them the most.
Bogey, MrB, and I have all been together since the beginning of our relationship (3-way, haha) Bogey loves us both for different things but I think it depends on the day. Like if MrB played Frisbee with him, he'd probably go cuddle with him first or if I just played tug-o-war, he'd come to me for snuggling.

Oh, goody! Everyone is surprised that my dog always prefers the males in my life. Lol...

If I'm home alone with him, at least, he gives me his undivided, even annoying, attention. :)

He still loves me. Just not when the boyfriend is around. Lol...

AWWW that costume is so ridiculously funny!

I don't understand people who say dogs don't have feelings. I put those people right up there with axe murderers.

My parents' dogs don't talk to my parents if they've been on holidays. It takes a while for them to forgive!
