Wiener-free weekend: Meow.

[Who's Your Dachshund is very pro-equality. We are also secure enough in our love of dogs, that we're totally okay with a guest post from JB about cats. Totally. We're fine. Seriously. No - I'm not shaking. I always sweat like this. I'm fine...I swear...]

I used to think dogs ruled and cats, well, didn’t. The only cat I had to validate that point was a 15lb. ball of hair and meanness. His name was Chester, and I bet my dad sure regretted teaching his eight year old daughter that “molester” rhymes with “Chester” whenever I would tell the vets about his fancy nickname. He was a big cat who didn’t like to be touched, and would let you know by biting your hand or kicking your head.

During the summertime, he’d take off gallivanting through nature for days or weeks on end, only returning home for a fattening meal and a nap, or sometimes for us to risk life and limb to comb out his burrs. He got in fights with skunks, foxes, and badgers. He killed many a mouse and bird. He would sit outside the windows or at the end of the leash of the dog across the street, staring smugly as said dog worked itself into a crazy, barking frenzy.

As you can see, I didn’t have much to enforce the idea that cats were worth having as lovable pets. I was vehemently a dog person, because at least with dogs you can take them for walks and watch them fetch balls, and they provided you with unconditional love! Cats couldn’t possibly offer that same companionship.

All of that changed when I adopted Kitty. Boo Boo. Butt-Muncher. Pain in the Ass. My Baby.
Although I can’t take her for walks, as she’s an indoor cat, I can still play fetch with her with pieces of string or grapes. She loves to play “hide the hair elastics,” where she finds all of my hair elastics no matter how creatively I try to store/hide them, and then buries them under my rugs or in my comforter. She sits pretty and begs for small nibbles when I eat pineapple or yogurt, and she’s too cute not to give into. She absolutely loves it when I pick her up and cradle her like a baby, or when I smoosh her face with kisses, or lazily rub her belly when we first wake up in the morning.

She follows me into the bathroom when I get ready in the morning and waits for me by the door when I come home from work. She curls up at my side and keeps me warm at night. She sits on my chest or head butts me when she thinks I haven’t given her enough attention. She’s litter trained, so I don’t have to worry about her making messes on the carpet. She doesn’t bark at strangers or goes bananas when there are people at the door. She doesn’t mind me leaving her alone all day because she sees it as time for basking in the sun and having the whole bed (or my bag or my sweatshirt) to herself for napping. How can cats not be as great or, dare I say it, greater pets than dogs? As much as I’d like to get a dog of my own in the future, I am happy having such a fantastic pet in Kitty.
You dog lovers out there, were you ever of the opinion that you weren’t a dog person until a bundle of canine joy joined your family?

yes i had been a dog person all my life until a black ball of fur picked me out. His name was eightball. he was in my life for 4yrs. if you were having a bad day he would do backflips. we lived in an old row house. 9ft ceilings, eightball would jump that high to catch the wrapper that you'd tossed. he play catch for hours. we'd take walks at night to finish the day. eightball would walk with us. laying down occasionally to have us rub him. the row house had old wooden screen doors. once, we had friends over for dinner. there was a knocking and said to one of the guest who was in the kitchen. to let the cat in. they said no way. eightball would jump to the top of the door. using his body weight he would make the door move which produce the knocking noise. he was very affectionate and if he felt he was being ignored he'd nip you. he was a great first cat. i still own cats but i've added three doxies to my life. what joy they bring me. take care

I enjoy cats but I've met few that have actually enjoyed me. I've been clawed, hissed at, had my laundry used as a urinal, etc.

I need more love-on-demand than cats have to offer. That's where Calvin - my dog/cat hybrid - comes in :)

I was a cat person and have two interesting felines living with me. When I got my first dog I wasn't impressed with canines and an incident made us a cat only family again. Later we got Moxie and I became an absolute Boxer lover.

But when things are quieting down for the night you will still find me having a special moment with my cats.

I love most animals, and though I've never had a cat of my own, I do like them. Even though they make me sneeze for twelve hours straight after hanging around them for an hour. Good thing my friend here who has cats always keeps a supply of Claritin around for me. Comes in handy.

*raises hand* allergic here too. I do like them though. Okay wait - I can't really say that I do.
And that is totally not by choice - I cannot be around them (sneezing, itchy throat = torture) is all but I'm sure I would like them if I was able to interact with one. :) Yours is gorgeous though. :)

Jam: Eightball sounded amazing! Chester sort of did the same thing when he wanted in a room and there was a closed door in his way. Except, instead of jumping into the door he'd... well, take a running start and then headbutt the door in the hopes it would open.

Ben: I have to agree, cats do take a bit more time to get to know people and warm up to them, whereas dogs are almost instantly connected to you. My sympathies to you for having your laundry used as a urinal, though.

Rachel: It's a good thing the unfortunate canine incident didn't turn you off dogs for good! I wonder, do your cats try to dominate your dog? Chester always was king, and he dominated over our beagle Nikki. Although, frankly, Chester was just as big as the dog, and meaner, so it wasn't hard for him to establish dominance.

Phil: Oh no! I heard cat allergies are far worse than dog allergies, especially. At least you have a very considerate friend!

Nicole: Thanks, she is one pretty kitty. Hopefully they'll cure allergies and you'll be able to find out whether or not you're a cat person.

Although I've always loved all kinds of animals. I thought I was 100% a cat person in terms of pets. Dogs seemed slobbery and requiring too much personal attention. Then Tofu came along.
